Here’s a custom 3” mandrel-bent exhaust system we recently fabricated for a 1968 Lincoln Continental — a true land yacht with plenty of character and future plans for serious upgrades.
While the customer plans to build a performance motor, overhaul the suspension, and transform this classic into a more aggressive street cruiser, the immediate goal was simple: make it sound cool—and that’s exactly what we delivered.
We used mild steel mandrel bends to ensure smooth, unrestricted flow throughout the system. We professionally MIG welded the entire exhaust — clean and functional — just the way the customer wanted. This isn’t a show car (yet), so we focused on performance and sound, not polished stainless or TIG-welded showpiece work.
Despite being a full-size ’60s sedan, the ’68 Lincoln offered surprisingly limited real estate underneath. Tight clearances, bulky frame rails, and factory design elements forced us to carefully route the 3” tubing. Every inch required precise planning to avoid interference with existing components while preserving functionality and ground clearance.
To protect the raw mild steel from rust for now, we applied a quick coat of Duplicolor High Heat black spray paint — nothing fancy, just enough to keep surface corrosion at bay. Down the road, the customer will have the entire system ceramic coated for long-term durability and thermal management.
This project perfectly balances future goals with current priorities — a throaty, custom exhaust that gives this classic Lincoln a meaner voice while keeping things budget-conscious for the build phase ahead.
- 3″ Mild Steel Mandrels were used and mig welded together
- 3″ flowmaster, 2-chamber mufflers were used.
- Even with 3″ exhaust, ground clearance is pretty good – this shot is from the side of the pinch weld
